The People Rise Up

Armed only with rocks and will, Iranians are fighting back against the Baseej, the government paramilitary force who have killed and injured hundreds of protesters.

These are people fighting for freedom. Nothing more. Simple freedom.

Watch a people struggle to free themselves of a brutal theocracy. Seeing it in virtual, real-time is breathtaking.

The fight is won, a Baseej is captured. He is protected by his enemy.

Fighting The War

A reader comment on Andrew Sullivan's blog.

"There is no end to the War on Terror and no way to prevent a 9/11 from happening again.
What I like about Obama is that he is trying to change how we view this conflict – it isn’t nation vs. nation or ideology vs. ideology but rather an effort to get the US out of the role of “The Great Satan” – that role is a great recruiting tool for Al Qaeda and others and unfortunately there are a seemingly endless supply of volunteers/suicide bombers. It will be a tough mission but one that can and will pay dividends if he is given the time (and support) to execute it.
Alternately, we can spend trillions of dollars and lose thousands of lives (US and others) but we won’t win as there isn’t a “loser” in this fight."

Compared To What

Forty years ago Les McCann released a live album from the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. The first track, "Compared To What" questioned the reasoning of the war in Vietnam.

The President, he's got his war
Folks don't know just what it's for
Nobody gives us rhyme or reason
Have one doubt, they call it treason

In 2009, it sounds as fresh as it did then.

I love the lie and lie the love
A-Hangin' on, with push and shove
Possession is the motivation
that is hangin' up the God-damn nation
Looks like we always end up in a rut (everybody now!)
Tryin' to make it real — compared to what? C'mon baby!

Slaughterhouse is killin' hogs
Twisted children killin' frogs
Poor dumb rednecks rollin' logs
Tired old lady kissin' dogs
I hate the human love of that stinking mutt (I can't use it!)
Try to make it real — compared to what? C'mon baby now!

The President, he's got his war
Folks don't know just what it's for
Nobody gives us rhyme or reason
Have one doubt, they call it treason
We're chicken-feathers, all without one nut. God damn it!
Tryin' to make it real — compared to what? (Sock it to me)

Church on Sunday, sleep and nod
Tryin' to duck the wrath of God
Preacher's fillin' us with fright
They all tryin' to teach us what they think is right
They really got to be some kind of nut (I can't use it!)
Tryin' to make it real — compared to what?

Where's that bee and where's that honey?
Where's my God and where's my money?
Unreal values, crass distortion
Unwed mothers need abortion
Kind of brings to mind ol' young King Tut (He did it now)
Tried to make it real — compared to what?!

Obama's War

I have one question. Why are Canadians still dying in Afghanistan?

A) To avenge an attack on America.
B) To save face on a bad decision.
C) To look tough on the world stage.
D) I have no idea. There is no rational answer. It makes no sense. No one's told me the plan.

I'm going with D.

All I know is that my countrymen are giving their lives for no one knows what. If not lives, then body parts, or most likely chunks of their souls. Eight years. Hundreds of Canadians dead, maimed or fucked up. Eight years of carnage with no end in sight. Ask anyone. Pick one Canadian and ask them what the fight is about. Why are we at war?

Obama's War is an in-depth, realistic look at the war in Afghanistan. You can watch the entire program starting on October 13th.

Where Did 'We' Go?

Thomas Friedman's opinion piece in today's New York Times struck a major nerve with me. The rhetoric being thrown around in the name of patriotism is criminal and is ultimately going to result in someone attempting to take the President's life.

"What kind of madness is it that someone would create a poll on Facebook asking respondents, “Should Obama be killed?” The choices were: “No, Maybe, Yes, and Yes if he cuts my health care.” The Secret Service is now investigating."

Keith Floyd was a real cook, a connoisseur. He made television cooking the way it should be made...a hot pan in one hand, a glass of Cabernet in the other. Full-on, heart-felt cookery. He was a genuine classic.

Judging by his last meal, he lived his life to the fullest.

Recently, Keith Allen made Keith Meets Keith, a documentary about Mr. Floyd shortly before his death.

R.I.P. Edward Kennedy 1932-2009

Senator Ted Kennedy has lost his battle with cancer. He was a stalwart of the U.S. Senate that championed health-care, education, labor and pensions. John Broder of the New York Times described him perfectly:

"He was a Rabelaisian figure in the Senate and in life, instantly recognizable by his shock of white hair, his florid, oversize face, his booming Boston brogue, his powerful but pained stride. He was a celebrity, sometimes a self-parody, a hearty friend, an implacable foe, a man of large faith and large flaws, a melancholy character who persevered, drank deeply and sang loudly. He was a Kennedy."

Quote of the day - a shocker!

"Barack Obama, a youngster in Hawaii without his parents around, has toughed it out and become one of history’s great stories, no matter what happens going forward. What he has achieved in his 48 years is simply astounding. Consider the odds. The United States is a nation of more than 300 million citizens. Only one person is currently the Commander in Chief. That man had no fatherly guidance, is of mixed race, and had no family connections to guide him into the world of national politics. That adds up to one simple truth that every American child should be told: “If Barack Obama can become the President of the United States, then whatever dream you may have can happen in your life." - Bill O'Reilly, yes, that Bill O'Reilly

Quote of the Day

"John McCain is unqualified to be Commander-in-Chief. McCain is a guy of rather mediocre intellect, little curiosity, and very poor and impulsive decision-making skills. He’s vain and headstrong, and he easily turns opposition over matters of policy or politics into personal vendettas. He became a political commodity in 1973 because he embodied the right-wing working-class value of patriotism under duress at a moment when patriotism and the white working class felt under attack for their complicity in a disastrous foreign war. And he was seized upon by a desperate Republican Party in political free-fall; in the thick of Watergate, the Nixon administration launched him as a political celebrity. He then parlayed that notoriety into a political career a few years down the road. He certainly has a substantial amount of charm and an instinct for playing the press, and he’s hardly the dumbest guy in the Senate. But he is not a responsible or serious person. And to a great degree, when he met Sarah Palin, he probably felt he was looking at a younger version of himself. Which is to say that the “rot” in the GOP, the eagerness to substitute celebrity and resentful pseudo-patriotic gibberish for real political discussion, goes back a lot longer than 8 years." - Matt Steinglass

Michael Jackson

I respect talent. And I really respect exceptional talent. It's an extremely rare commodity. Michael Jackson had a very special gift. He had the ability to mesmerize literally billions of people with his music and his persona. He fed off of the adulation and morphed himself into a caricature. Yes, he was abused. Not only by his father and those around him but also by an insatiable media. Given those circumstances I'll try and comprehend the whole race and gender modification thing. What troubles me most is the repeated abuse of sick children left alone with him. It is well documented what happened to those boys. A single accusation might be defensible. Multiple affidavits citing providing alcohol and pornography to minors followed by sexual misconduct is indefensible. Mr. Jackson paid millions of dollars to his accusers after he was acquitted in criminal court. That is not an action of an innocent man.

You Who Wronged

by Czeslaw Milosz

You who wronged a simple man
Bursting into laughter at the crime,
And kept a pack of fools around you
To mix good and evil, to blur the line,

Though everyone bowed down before you,
Saying virtue and wisdom lit your way,
Striking gold medals in your honor,
Glad to have survived another day,

Do not feel safe. The poet remembers.
You can kill one, but another is born.
The words are written down, the deed, the date.

And you’d have done better with a winter dawn,
A rope, and a branch bowed beneath your weight.

A Revolution in pictures

A great slideshow that captures the essence of this epic fight.

Her Name Is Neda

"At 19:05 June 20th Place: Karekar Ave., at the corner crossing Khosravi St. and Salehi st. A young woman who was standing aside with her father watching the protests was shot by a basij member hiding on the rooftop of a civilian house. He had clear shot at the girl and could not miss her. However, he aimed straight her heart.

I am a doctor, so I rushed to try to save her. But the impact of the gunshot was so fierce that the bullet had blasted inside the victim's chest, and she died in less than 2 minutes. The protests were going on about 1 kilometers away in the main street and some of the protesting crowd were running from tear gass used among them, towards Salehi St.

The film is shot by my friend who was standing beside me. Please let the world know."

Battle w/ Police - Tehran, Iran - June 20th 2009

The Most Staggering Footage Yet

"And I've seen a lot. Just watch this pitched battle in the streets between a crowd and the riot police (via BBC Farsi). And watch it to the very end, as the police suddenly turn tail and run. Yes, you can hear the shouts 'Hurrah!" and I confess I found myself yelling it at my lap-top as well. Let us hope this is a microcosm of the whole thing. Faced with so many with such determination, the will of the regime will crumble." - Andrew Sullivan

Poem For The Rooftops Of Iran

Tomorrow Saturday is very important; Day of destiny.
Tonight the screams of “God is great” [Allah-o Akbar]
is louder than on any other night.

Where is this place?
Where is this place that all paths are closed? All doors are shut?
Where is this place that no one helps us?

Where is this place that we shout out our words with only silence?
Where is this place?
Where is this place that its people’s only call is to God?
Where is this place that its cry of Allah-o Akbar ["God is Great"]
Grows louder and louder every minute?

Every day I wait to see if at night
The cries of “God is Great” grows louder or not.
I tremble as I hear them getting louder and louder.
I do not know if God trembles too or not.

Where is this place that we the innocents are stuck in [imprisoned]?
Where is this place that no one can help us?
where is this place that we are only shouting out our words with silence?
Where is this place that the youth are killed and people stand in the street and pray?
They stand in the blood and pray.
Where is this place that people are called [vagrants] trouble makers?

Where is this place?
Do you want me to tell you?
It is Iran.
It is my home land and your home land.
It is Iran.

An Homage to Iran's National Football Team

Imagine your country is about to descend into chaos.....

"Just got off the phone with a person who has a lot of insight into Iranian football. He covers Iranian soccer extensively and has interviewed many of the national players in the past few years. He made a great point. He said the 6 people who wore the bands, with the exception of one, are at the end of their careers and, knowing that there will be some kind of reaction, likely took the fall for rest of the team. He firmly believes the 5 older team members who others look up to most likely asked the others not to take the chance and not ruin their professional and financial careers." - Nico Pitney

This is courage.

“I will participate in the demonstrations tomorrow. Maybe they will turn violent. Maybe I will be one of the people who is going to get killed. I’m listening to all my favorite music. I even want to dance to a few songs. I always wanted to have very narrow eyebrows. Yes, maybe I will go to the salon before I go tomorrow! There are a few great movie scenes that I also have to see. I should drop by the library, too. It’s worth to read the poems of Forough and Shamloo again. All family pictures have to be reviewed, too. I have to call my friends as well to say goodbye. All I have are two bookshelves which I told my family who should receive them. I’m two units away from getting my bachelors degree but who cares about that. My mind is very chaotic. I wrote these random sentences for the next generation so they know we were not just emotional and under peer pressure. So they know that we did everything we could to create a better future for them. So they know that our ancestors surrendered to Arabs and Mongols but did not surrender to despotism. This note is dedicated to tomorrow’s children…” - an Iranian blogger, with more courage than most of us will ever know.

Day 6

Quote of the day

It’s just too big, it’s going on for too many days, it’s in too many cities, and it’s too all-embracing. The regime has completely lost control of the space of public politics, and the opposition has been very skillful in taking it over. You can’t allow your opposition to develop a message so simple that everyone can embrace it. When you have a situation where all anyone needs to do to signal they’ve joined the opposition is to step into the street and start walking, where all they have to do is cry “Allahu Akbar” and it means they want the President to resign and cancel the elections, you’ve lost. - Matt Steinglass

Been on a bit of a Sichuan bender these days. Discovered Garlic & Chile in Burnaby. After twenty or so trips, I might have to admit I may have a problem. Nah. This is incredible food.

Perfectly spiced Hot & Sour Soup. Tam Tam Noodles with the just the right amount of peanut sauce and chili oil. The Mongolian Beef is tender, spicy and loaded with wok hay. The Braised Beef Noodle Soup was superb. And then there's the Singing Chicken Hot Pot! The chef, Mr. Yin, even made us a traditional Sichuan soup that wasn't on the menu.

I know I have a serious addiction. I'm just going to have to deal with it...one dish at a time.

I still revere the pho ritual. I feel excited when waiting for my bowl to arrive, chopsticks cursorily cleaned with paper and ready. Juice is extracted from a wedge of lime. Hot red sauce is passed over in favour of a few slices of fresh chili. A drop of garlic-infused vinegar, a shake of pepper. The ceremonial lifting and dropping of the noodles with the sticks and spoon to mix the condiments in signals that the preparation is done. Afterwards, I wipe my mouth with a square of flimsy napkin and insert the toothpick. - Stickyrice
